Bar Cross Ranch, summer 1979

The Bar Cross foreperson, Melody Harding (niece of longtime foreman Red Mathisen, now retired), joins the haying crew in time for a picnic lunch and a swig of Champagne. Melody's days were spent horseback or caring for cows and calves. For the most part, when John Perry could corral sufficient tractor drivers from his far-flung friendships, Melody managed to avoid wrangling intransigent haying machinery.
