John Phillips was one of the guiding spirits behind the Monterey Pop Festival. It was the first pop-rock festival to present only headline acts, and many consider it to have been the best of all the late-60s music festivals. The Mamas and the Papas' willingness to commit themselves to the event moved the planning sessions from pipe dreams to reality.
